Keyboard Institute IRC

Our IRC server is available at irc.keyboard.institute, port 6697. We have all the normal anope services so you can register your nickname with /msg NickServ register.

Connecting with Halloy

Download Halloy from GitHub. Use the msi file for Windows.

Add the following to your Halloy configuration file (open halloy, click the hamburger menu in the bottom left, click "open configuration file"):

Note: you don't need the square brackets around your nickname or password, those are just to denote this is a variable

[servers.kbi]
nickname = "[your nickname]"
nick_password = "[put your password here after registering your nickname]"
server = "irc.keyboard.institute"
channels = ["#keyboards", "#kbi-general", "#kbi-computers", "#kbi-gallery", "#kbi-pricestrading", "#kbi-support", "#kbi-workshop", "#rules"]

Once you've connected, type /msg NickServ register [password] [email] to register your username. You don't need to use a real email, we don't want to collect your data. Then add the password you used into the config file and close and reopen Halloy. You can view the rest of the configuration options here.

Setting a vhost

If you don't want people to be able to see your IP address, you should set a vhost. After following all the instructions above, do /msg HostServ request your.cool.vhost (set to whatever you want!), then ping eris or another operator to approve it. It will then take effect every time you connect.

Global Server Rules

Breaking any of the following rules will be met with immediate ejection and permanent bans.

  1. No illegal content.
  2. No targeted harassment of other users.
  3. No ruleslawyering when you do something that isn't in this document but is obviously going to get you banned.

Keyboard Institute Rules (applicable in KBI channels)

The following rules apply in any Keyboard Institute-run channels:

  1. The Keyboard Institute channels are about keyboards, input devices and computing in general. While we are primarily a vintage community, more modern devices and users are welcome.
  2. a) We are a community comprised from people of all walks of life from all around the globe. Respect our differences and avoid disparaging others based on race, origin, nationality, religion, sexuality, physical ability, mental ability, medical conditions, gender identity, economic status, etc.
    b) You are expected to conduct yourself with respect for what others are sharing. Someone posting a picture of something they like is not an invitation for you to opine on how bad you think it is, or how they are bad for liking it. (This rule does not mean you can't discuss whether you think something is bad or good, just that you shouldn't be using sentiments shared in earnest as an excuse to start ripping on something)
  3. Keep roughly to the subject of each channel. Consider #keyboards to be the lobby of this server and move your conversation to an appropriate off-topic channel if it veers away from keyboards, input devices, and computers.
  4. Objectively offensive material such as pornography, propaganda from authoritarian regimes, bitcoin, and hate speech is not allowed anywhere on this server. Asking members for explicit photos is forbidden. This server may not be used for unlawful purposes. No threats, doxing, or endangering others.
  5. Disagreements and debate about relevant topics and about people's behaviors with respect to the server topics are permitted and encouraged. However, please keep it civil and focused on the issues rather than on the people. Telling someone you disagree with their pricing and explaining why is ok, telling them you hope they die is not.
  6. Ops will issue warnings or temporarily mute for minor infractions and may kick or ban for gross violations of decency or failure to heed operator warnings. Operators may also exercise discretion on a case by case basis to act in the interest of the community.
  7. Known scalpers and dishonest dealers with a history of defrauding or exploiting the community will be banned.
  8. TL;DR don't be a jerk, try to make people feel welcome, act like a community, and focus on the cool technology. No bullying or shitposting in help channels, if you can't hold it in in a help channel you know where the door is.
  9. No WTB, WTT or WTS. The KBI channels are a DMZ: De-Monetized Zone. This IRC server is not a valuation service. This IRC server is not for outsourcing tech support for your commercial products. Price checks are allowed but you must provide a price for people to comment on. No fishing.
  10. Exceptions to the above rule include: buying converters buying / receiving parts to repair a board. Any use of community charity to repair a board for the purpose of flipping it will result in an immediate ban.
  11. Posting unsafe advice that can cause serious personal injury is a banworthy offence.
  12. Anything we forgot. No keyboardjoys, no webwits
